ABOUT US
S:VOX's vision is to be a voice for abuse survivors and those who support them and to play a significant part in creating a society where the effects of abuse are addressed and further abuse is prevented. We use the term "survivor" as a shorthand for people who have experienced any form of abuse in childhood or adulthood, but encourage people to use whatever language they feel comfortable with in relation to themselves. From Silence to Sanctuary: One of the S:VOX trustees, Jane Chevous, has written a book about abuse, its causes, effects and prevention. S:VOX's aims are to:

  1. Facilitate the development of self-help networks that support abuse survivors and those who support them, in order to assist healing and recovery
  2. Educate the wider community about abuse, its effects and prevention
  3. Advocate with and for abuse survivors and those who support them, both on a social policy and individual level.

Please note that SVOX does not provide counselling or therapy, either on a one to one or in a group setting.

S:VOX origins and current activities.

SVOX has evolved in part from the "survivors programme" at the annual Greenbelt Arts Festival where for the last 7 years we have run self-help groups for survivors and educational seminars for the wider community on issues relating to abuse. Go to the page on SVOX work at the Greenbelt Arts Festival for more information.

We run a well established email forum for survivors who have attended the self-help groups at Greenbelt. We have just launched new forums for abuse survivors and friends so do register for these and join our on-line community. For more details on how this works, go to the Email forums page.

In addition, we have run self-help weekends at least annually since 2005 and have more planned for 2008. We are also regularly run training to facilitate the setting up of local self help groups. For more information on either of these, go to the self-help weekends page and s:vox training page. We also run training to educate the wider community about abuse and its effects. Do contact us if you want us to run something in your area or organisation.
